Installing New Version Rear Side Panels On Cars Prior To 198 0 Models

Only the new version rear side panels from 1980 models are available for replacements.

Or, depending on extent of damage, weld in a new reinforcement.

After using up stocks of old version parts in cars prior to 1980 models, the new version rear side panel will be applicable to all models.

The following additional procedures will be necessary to install the new version parts in cars prior to the 1980 models.

1. The striker pin base has been made 4, 5 mm deeper so that the longer pin from the Type 928 door lock could be installed.

Since the new striker pin is mounted with 3 bolts (previously one) the new version panel is delivered without bolt holes.

Because of the deeper striker pin base, the reinforcement must be reworked slightly (inside broken line) on cars prior to 1980 models.

An additional spacer, Part No. 999. 025. 074. 02, ired when installing the old striker.

2. The opening for removal of the torsion bar -shaded area - on inside of the side panel must be welded shut to be waterproof.

4. On right rear side panels the filler pipe opening on the inner panel must be adapted to the tank flap opening.

2. The opening for removal of the torsion bar -shaded area - on inside of the side panel must be welded shut to be waterproof.

3. The wheel opening on the rear wheel house of cars prior to 1979 models must be additionally reworked as described on page 53 - 10.

4. On right rear side panels the filler pipe opening on the inner panel must be adapted to the tank flap opening.

Normally this opening must be enlarged at an angle from above by about 10 to 15 mm.

Weld a bracket on the wheel house (according to the specified dimensions) for mounting the tank filler pipe strap.

Installing New Version Rear Side Panels in Cars Prior to 1980 Models

The lower rubber hose from the fuel tank to the filler pipe must be shortened to a length of 135 mm, so that it can be tightly connected on the tapered pipe surface with a hose clamp and the filler opening will be centered in the tank flap opening.

The following tank parts are required for conversions in cars prior to 1980 models.

- New filler pipe

- Bracket

- Rubber sleeve with snap ring

- Hose clamps

- Tank flap with M 5 x 11 screws

- Liner and rubber stop

Install flange above the filler pipe.

924 Turbo

a fuel system expansion tank is welded in the C pillar of all cars of Type 924 and Turbo. This expansion tank is located above the tank flap between the inner and outer side panels.

1. Remove side window, side trim panel, carpet, etc.. also refer to page 53 - 5. Take off filler neck cover as well.

2. Disconnect hoses for expansion tank and catch any escaping gasoline. Clean tank thoroughly with compressed air.
